Poste Vecie

Trattoria a Poste Vecie stands next to the Rialto fish market. It was one of the favorite spots of Hugo Pratt (1927–1995), the creator of the sailor-adventurer Corto Maltese. Although Pratt was born in Rimini he grew up in Venice, and remained tied to this city throughout his life.

Hugo Pratt was known as a convivial character who liked to eat and drink with style in genuinely Venetian places. Poste Vecie is mentioned among these “Venetian tables” associated with Pratt. But this place is special. When you step into this trattoria – you step into history. This building that once was a post office still boasts 16th century fireplaces that are still in working order and frescoes portraying seven deadly sins. And for fresh seasonal produce they don`t need to go far – the markets are right here.

You might imagine that another famous Venetian writer – Giacomo Casanova dined here. Many itineraries list this trattoria that opened in the 1500s as one of the places he would go to. Poste Vecie even created a tasting menu to celebrate the 300 year anniversary of Casanova`s birth, some dishes taking direct inspiration from quotes from his famous work “History of my life”. He might have been at this very spot drinking a glass of Pino Nero or Malvasia and eating prawns he (and his mother) loved so much.
